We consistently return to values and life’s purpose. Imagine the chaos in your life if you are unclear about your values and fail to write them down and review them daily. Now, envision the disarray among those who work for you in your startup if they are unaware of your organization’s values. They will feel paralyzed, not knowing the purpose of their work each day. They will require constant guidance and micro-management, leading to long-term dissatisfaction, illness, and departure as soon as they find another job, with declining performance. In contrast, if they know what’s important for the company and you as the founder, they are more likely to take the right action.
Having said this, keep in mind the country you are in. In some countries, where you don’t have a social safety net, failure could be much more difficult, sometimes even a life-or-death situation. In some European countries, declaring bankruptcy is not as straightforward as in others.
Today, we are more supported in the “jungle” of life. For my grandparents, the jungle of life meant losing everything, escaping their country, or facing death. In the distant past, this jungle was a literal threat from predators. Urban environments can still be dangerous. However, for most of us in the modern world of North America and parts of the Western world, risk-taking can offer returns, and failure is not life and death. You can transition over 18 months from a conventional or salaried job to your own business.
