In the heart of Crestone, Colorado, cradled by the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains, I embarked on an 11-day solo vision quest. Battling the elements and immersing myself in nature, I sought clarity and purpose amidst the untamed beauty of the wilderness. Weary yet deeply attuned to the natural world, I returned to the quaint village of Crestone and stepped into a health store, marking my re-entry into the “ordinary” world. It was here, among shelves of herbal remedies and organic produce, that I met Maya, a woman who exuded an undeniable aura of peace and wisdom.

Crestone, Colorado.

Clad in vibrant, flowing attire adorned with handmade Native American jewelry, Maya’s presence was magnetic. Her natural beauty shone through, from her graceful hands to her Bohemian sandals, a reflection of her commitment to authenticity. As I found myself drawn to her energy, Maya smiled warmly, seemingly aware of my admiration. Her appearance, thoughtful and intentional, was less about fashion and more a reflection of her true essence.

“It looks like you communed with the spirits up there,” Maya remarked, gesturing towards the Sangre de Christos towering peaks. She noticed my surprise and added, “Your deep, dark eyes tell many stories.”

“You look like you communed with the spirits up there,” Maya said, gesturing toward the towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristos. Her words struck a chord, as if she could see the stories in my eyes. She spoke of the journey I had just undergone, recognizing the profound nature of my experience without me saying a word.

“How’s the old wise one?” she asked, catching me off guard. Unsure of whom she referred to, I thought of the shamans I had encountered on my journey — Jose Stevens, John P. Milton, and the spirit of one of my greatest mentors, G.I. Gurdjieff. Vision quests often blur the lines of time and reality, and encounters with spirits, animals, and even UFOs seem possible. Yet this quest, unlike others, did not rely on psychedelics but instead on nature as the ultimate guide.

Maya’s smile deepened. “You know, your shaman, John P. Milton.” She added, with a twinkle in her eye, “You look like Gurdjieff.”

A shiver ran down my spine. How could she have known? During my time in the mountains, I had indeed encountered Gurdjieff, an extraordinary figure in my life and spiritual journey. Maya had tapped into the very essence of my quest without me uttering a word.

Gurdjieff, a philosopher and mystic, believed that most people lived in a state of hypnotic “waking sleep,” unaware of their potential for higher consciousness. His teachings, known as “The Work,” were a path to awakening, and my encounter with his spirit during the vision quest felt like a profound reminder of the truth I had sought.

George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1867–October 29, 1949) was a philosopher, mystic, spiritual teacher, composer, and teacher of sacred dances called The Movements. Gurdjieff taught that people are not conscious of themselves and thus live their lives in a state of hypnotic “waking sleep,” but that it is possible to awaken to a higher state of consciousness and serve our purpose as human beings. The practice of his teaching has become known as “The Work.”

I invited Maya to join me for fresh carrot juice with ginger; I hoped to ease my transition back into the physical world after days of fasting and soul-searching. As we sat together, sipping on the revitalizing elixir, Maya began to share her wisdom as I basked in her light and positive energy. “Words carry vibrations,” Maya began, her voice soft yet commanding. “They have the power to shape your inner and outer reality.”

“Words carry vibrations. They have the power to shape your inner and outer reality.”

My associative mind wondered about how we name children, my name and her name in particular, in various spiritual traditions. I heard the term “Maya” holds significant meaning, often representing the illusory nature of the material world and the veil of illusion that obscures the true nature of reality. The concept of Maya is prominent in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other Eastern philosophies, which I have studied over the years with various teachers and shamans.

In Hinduism, Maya is often associated with the creative power of the divine, represented by the goddess Maya or Mahamaya. She is considered the mother of all illusion and is responsible for manifesting the material world. Maya is seen as a cosmic force that veils the true essence of the divine and binds individuals to the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (samsara).

Within the context of Advaita Vedanta, a non-dualistic school of Hindu philosophy, Maya is viewed as the cosmic illusion that prevents individuals from realizing their true nature as Atman (the Self) or Brahman (the ultimate reality). Overcoming Maya is essential for achieving spiritual liberation (moksha) and realizing unity with the divine.

In Buddhism, particularly in the teachings of the Buddha, Maya refers to the deceptive nature of existence and the delusions that lead to suffering. The concept of Maya is closely related to the idea of impermanence and the transient nature of phenomena. By transcending Maya through insight and wisdom, practitioners aim to attain enlightenment (nirvana) and liberate themselves from the cycle of suffering (samsara).

I could not help but ask her about the vibration and the meaning of her name, and she said, “Overall, the spiritual meaning of Maya encompasses the idea of illusion, delusion, and the deceptive nature of worldly existence. It serves me as a reminder to look beyond the surface of reality and seek deeper truths that lead to spiritual awakening and liberation.”

She explained the concept of high-vibration words — words that resonate with positive energy and elevate one’s thoughts, emotions, and physical reality. From “abstraction,” “abundance,” and “acceptance” to “love,” “gratitude,” and “peace,” each word held its unique power.

“As you journeyed through your Vision Quest, facing your inner demons and navigating the outer challenges of the weather — from chilling cold evenings to scorching hot days — along with hunger, boredom, and fears, you encountered the wild inhabitants of the mountains. From bears to mountain lions, snakes, scorpions, insects, and birds, each presented an opportunity to learn profound lessons about your true nature,” Maya continued. “Amidst these trials, you were attuned to the universe’s vibrations. But here, amid everyday life, the worldly challenges begin as you are constantly tempted into forgetfulness and sleep. Maintaining that connection is your real Work.”

Maya shared anecdotes of Sufi dervishes passing through Crestone, their Zikr carrying the essence of divine love, and Tibetan lamas imparted profound teachings and “Empowerment” that transcended language. Through their words, these spiritual masters touched the hearts and souls of those who crossed their paths, awakening dormant potentials and igniting inner transformation. “In every word we speak and think, we shape our reality,” Maya emphasized. “Our thoughts, emotions, and physical actions are all interconnected, influencing one another in a delicate dance of energy.”

“By consciously choosing high-vibration words, you can align your entire being with the highest frequencies of the universe, attracting abundance, joy, and fulfillment into your life.”

She explained how high-vibration words uplift the spirit and have tangible effects on our physical well-being. Studies have shown positive affirmations can reduce stress, boost the immune system, and promote overall health and vitality. “By consciously choosing high-vibration words,” Maya advised, “you can align your entire being with the highest frequencies of the universe, attracting abundance, joy, and fulfillment into your life.”

As I listened to Maya’s teachings, a sense of clarity washed over me as if I had been given the keys to unlock the mysteries of existence. I realized that the power to shape my reality lay within the words I spoke and the thoughts I entertained.

Upon my return from the mountains, filled with newfound insights and a deeper connection to the universe, I felt compelled to integrate the teachings of high-vibrational words into my work and daily life. Eager to expand my repertoire, I delved into research, scouring the internet for a comprehensive list of such words.
